What is a tarp?

A tarpaulin, also known as a tarp, is a large, strong, flexible sheet that is made up of windproof, water-resistant, or waterproof material. Used for various purposes such as protection of cargo and dry van trailer straps, shelter, roof and many others; the material often used is canvas, polyester, polyethylene etc.

What is a heavy-duty tarp and a regular tarp?

Heavy-duty tarps are considered heroes, as they pose as a cover or protection, especially in the industrial area. From camping adventures to carrying cargo using ratchet straps with E fitting to construction sites, these covers provide safety work as a protective shelter. These are made of vinyl, canvas, or parachute material manufactured with high-quality standards, usually double stitched at the corners, and the seams offer extra durability.

On the other hand, regular tarps are made of light-duty work and are considered all-purpose covers. These are mostly used for providing shade or as a prevention from the rain. Regular tarps are acceptable to be used for short journeys in order to cover pickup truck beds and utility trucks, ensuring the protection of the cargo as well as the dry van trailer straps that are used for safety purposes. Even though they can be used for multi-purposes, regular tarps are not as strong as well as durable as heavy duty tarps.

Types of heavy-duty tarps

Polyethylene tarps

Also known as poly tarps, polyethylene tarps are the most versatile and widely used tarps for heavy-duty purposes. These tarps are constructed using woven strands of polyethylene, which is coated with a waterproof layer. They are available in various thicknesses and colours based on the requirement.

Applications

Construction sites: serve as a protection for equipment from rain and debris.

Camping: works as a durable sheet to cover the ground as well as shelter from the rain.

Agriculture: used as a cover for crops, hay and farm equipment.

Vinyl traps

Vinyl traps are the most popular for their water resistance abilities and durability. These tarps are made of polyester vinyl coated material (PVC), also known as vinyl corene, and are remarkably tough, which contributes to their long-lasting ability. Vinyl traps are used when utmost protection is required.

Applications

Truck and trailer: shields and protects the cargo as well as the ratchet straps with E fitting from snow, rain or UV rays

Industrial purpose: serves as a cover for machinery, outdoor storage and construction material.

Outdoor events: works as a shelter for outdoor gatherings.

Canvas tarps

Canvas tarps are very breathable and are preferred for their natural appearance. These tarps are strong as well as tear resistant and are constructed of cotton or a blend of cotton and polyester.

Applications

Artistic use: used for painting on canvas as well as DIY projects

Landscaping: for protection from trees and shrubs during winters.

Camping and hiking: works as a breathable shelter for camping and hiking purposes

Mesh tarp

Mesh tarps have a porous-like structure that makes them unique. Their designs let the airflow and the sunlight pass through while also protecting the elements at some level.

Application

Shade structures: mostly used to provide shade and relief from the sun in outdoor areas.

Privacy screens: used a curtain to maintain privacy at an event or a construction site.

Windbreaks: used as a tool to reduce the speed of the wind in agricultural settings.

Fire-retardants tarps

These are used in the places that are most likely to catch fire, as well as for safety purposes. A chemical-resistant chemical is used on these tarps in order to prevent the fire from igniting.

Applications

Welding and construction sites: prevents sparks from igniting fire.

Camping in wildlife areas: to enhance and ensure safety in areas that are prone to fire.

Outdoor cooking: protects nearby stuff from burning

These are some types of heavy-duty tarps that you can use. You can choose them depending upon the purpose, but remember to check for wear and tear before using them to avoid any kind of problems in the future.
